Canyon View Elementary has been set up to be a host school for Google's CS First program. CS First is a program focused on increasing student access and exposure to Computer Science (CS) Education.
In the first 8 week session of CV's Tech Club students will learn about game design using the program Scratch. Club members will learn how to code some basic video game building blocks, such as making a character move around the screen, interact with other characters, and score points. In the process, club members will create fun games of their own.

Tech Club Schedule
- October 22: Introduction and Discovery
The first day of the club is structured in a way that allows club members to establish a classroom culture, understand the scope of the club, learn CS First procedures, and begin to explore the Scratch programming interface. After the host introduces club expectations, members will have a chance to explore Scratch and to program something unexpected - October 29: A Racing Game
Club member sill create a two-player racing game in which players control movement with the keyboard. To run the project, use the arrows to move the elephant and the w, a, and d keys to move the dinosaur
- November 5: Maze Game
Today, club members will create a game in which the player guides a sprite through a maze. To run the example project, click the frog, then try to drag it through the maze without hitting a lake. If the frog hits the lake, it will return to the lily pad. - November 12: A Platform Game
In this session, club members will create and learn about platform games. Members will program a player sprite to move and jump across platforms when the arrow keys are pressed. In order to win, the player sprite must make it across all the platforms and touch another sprite. To run the project: Click the green flag and use teh arrow keys to move the monkey. - November 19: Escape Game
In this club session, members will create an escape game in which a player must avoid other sprites that are moving randomly. The longer the user avoids these sprites, the higher their score. - December 3: Launcher Game
In this club session, members will create a launcher game using keypress events, clones, and variables. In this game, a player must launch and navigate a sprite across a screen of bouncing enemies. - December 10: Falling Objects Game
Week 7 of Scratch Game Design is different from the previous club days, in that members choose what they would like to work on. Club members can choose to 1) Create their own unique game or story, 2) Remix and build upon a past project, or 3) Follow a video tutorial to learn about broadcasting by building a falling objects game. - December 17: Caving Surfing Game
On Week 8 of CS First Game Design, club members will create a game with a side scrolling background (similar to the popular game Flappy Bird). In this game, the player sprite moves up and down to avoid obstacles. This club ends with certificate distribution and a closing reflective discussion.
